Engineering student dies of dengue in GRH

One person died of dengue and five others due to some mysterious disease since Saturday night.

Vasuki (18), daughter of Sudhakar and an engineering college student, who tested positive for dengue was undergoing treatment at the ICU in the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH). “She was admitted to the GRH at an advanced stage. We tried our best to save her life,” said N Mohan, Dean of the GRH, Madurai.

Though parents of five others - Bhama (35), wife of Pandi from Pudhusukkampatti in Melur Taluk, Velumani (23) of Chennagarampatti, Bharath (11) of Palaiyurpatti, Vijaya (28) wife of Bose from Udayanpatti and Karthikeyan (6) of Chokkampatti -  also breathed their last. Though relatives claimed that they died of dengue, doctors denied it.

Dr S Senthil Kumar, the Deputy Director of Health Services, Madurai said that Vijaya died due uterus problem and others due to viral fever. Three of the deceased died at private hospitals, said Senthil Kumar adding that Karthikeyan and Bharath did not undergo the test

Meanwhile, family members of Velumani (23) of Chennagarampatti blocked the Melur-Natham road condemning the authorities for not providing proper treatment to the dengue victims. The villagers also claimed that the doctors at the Melur GH were not properly attending to visitors with dengue symptoms. On the other hand, the PHC near their village doesn’t have sufficient doctors and nurses, they said. The villagers demanded a compensation of `2 lakh for the deceased family.

The road roko affected vehicle movement in the area for nearly two hours.
