Central grants set to give a leg up to tourism sector

Tourism being the core sector that generates high revenue for the UT, the government discussed schemes that could be formulated under the Central Sponsored Scheme (CSS) to develop the sector.

The discussion was held as part of the first meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee under the chairmanship of  Welfare Minister P Rajavelu on Monday and also talked about how best to use the CSS funds for Social Welfare Department, Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, Women and Child Welfare Department and Labour, besides the Tourism Department.

The committee evaluated ongoing schemes implemented by these departments and chalked out modalities to bring out new schemes. The main objective of the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department is to uplift the socio-economic conditions of Scheduled Caste people, particularly in education and health sectors and providing civic amenities to areas where there is concentration of Scheduled Caste people. Providing house and  house-site pattas to the needy among Scheduled Caste people was also discussed. 

The panel also talked about problems faced by differently-abled persons and labourers in private factories and suitable rehabilitation. Deputy Speaker T P R Selvam, MLAs E Valsaraj, A M H Nazeem, P Angalan, Nandha T Saravanan, Omsakthi Sekar, P M L Kalyanasundaram,  Government whip G Nehru alias Kuppusamy and P R Siva participated in the meeting.
