Plea seeks voting rights for women in Jamaat poll

A petition seeking voting rights for women in a jamaat was filed in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently. The petitioner, S Amroz Tahira (56) of Batlagundu, said that prior to the said elections the management committee of the jamaat had been constituted by selecting two representatives each from three sects, Rowther Jamath (Lebbai), Dhakni Jamath (Urudu speaking) and Parimala Sunnath Jamath.

The Superintendent of TN Wakf board had issued an election notice on September 21, 2012 in which it was mentioned that only male Muslim residents of Batlagundu, who have attained majority would be entitled to submit their representations for addition or deletion of their names in the voters’ list.

Pointing out that only the voting right was sought, she pleaded for quashing the election notification.
