The officials of District Social Welfare Office (DSWO), revenue and police department have stopped three minor marriages since Tuesday in the district.

The relatives of a 17-year-old girl, who was studying in class XII in a government higher secondary school in her village Muthur, alerted the All Women Police in Arakkonam on Tuesday, about the marriage arrangements to Revathy (name changed). She said the girl’s parents had arranged the marriage with one Vijayakumar, a relative, on Friday.

Acting on information, the police rushed to the village along with DSWO and revenue officials. They stopped the marriage, scheduled to be held at Thiruthani on Friday. “The parents of the girl and boy gave written statements stating that they had called off the marriage,” said the official. Similarly, the officials thwarted the marriage of a 14-year-old school girl, a resident of Bairapalli village, in Ambur taluk police station limit on Wednesday. “The girl was a class IX student in a government school in the locality. The girl’s mother Janaki, a widow, had fixed her marriage with a 25-year-old youth on Thursday and stopped her from going to school a week ago,” District Social Welfare Officer P Gomathi said.

The DSWO received a call on Wednesday. The caller informed them about the minor’s marriage. With the help of the Ambur taluk police, the DSWO prevented the marriage and also obtained written assurance from the families stating that they would stop not go ahead with the marriage.

In yet another incident, a girl, a resident of Pattuvarpatti, was about to get married to a youth of Pattavampatti, but the revenue officials acted swiftly and stopped the marriage, said the officials.
