Petition in HC seeks de-recognition of PMK

A public interest writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court for a direction to the Election Commission of India to de-recognise the Paattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), founded by Dr S Ramadoss, as it was allegedly functioning against the aim of Sec 29-A(5) of the Representation of People Act.

According to petitioner R Varaaki of Tambaram East, who claimed himself as a journalist and president of Indian Makkal Mandram, he had represented to the government not to grant permission to the Vanniyar Sangam to celebrate the ‘Chithirai Thiruvizha’ at Mahabalipuram on April 25.  He had  also filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court with the same prayer. However, the Kanchipuram district superintendent granted permission for the festival, subject to certain conditions.

The participants in the said Vizha had unleashed violence. Three buses were torched in Marakkanam. Police personnel were injured. Public properties were damaged. The conditions stipulated were violated. Ramadass and his son Anbumani violated the Constitution and pushed the Vanniyar community into the ‘stone era’, petitioner alleged.

His interim prayer was for a direction to the Kanchi District Collector and the local police to produce the antecedents of Ramadoss and Anbumani in the court.

Meanwhile, hearing on the petition seeking bail for Ramadoss was adjourned to Friday by the Villupuram court. The bail petition was moved in the Villupuram Judicial Magistrate-1. The petition came for hearing in the court on Thursday. As police sought time to submit their response, the magistrate, Sivakumar, postponed the matter for Friday.
