Know your engineering teachers online

Aspiring engineering students can soon have a better picture of the faculty and infrastructure facilities at colleges which they opt for.  The Anna University, Chennai has started collecting details like faculty strength and the qualification and experience of the faculty members from over 600 engineering colleges affiliated to it across Tamil Nadu. The information will soon be uploaded on the university’s website.

Anna University had recently sent a circular to engineering colleges seeking details of faculty members including their names, educational qualifications, experience and the number of years they have been serving in the present institution.

The university has already uploaded some basic information about 630 engineering colleges (186 in headquarters, Chennai and surrounding districts, 217 in Coimbatore region, 98 in Tiruchy region, 53 in Madurai region and 76 in Tirunelveli region) on its website at www.annauniv.edu/cai13b/Options.html.

It has details like name, address, phone numbers, college website id, year of establishment, type of college (government, government-aided, self-financing), minority status and courses offered (sanctioned intake and year of starting a particular course).

“It will take three to four months to collect all details from the 600-odd engineering colleges. Once we get the details, we will verify the information given by the colleges and upload it on our website for the benefit of the student community,” said a senior official of Anna University, Chennai.

Academicians say that this will benefit students who now face difficulties in identifying the facilities available in the engineering colleges. Before joining a course, they can verify details about the faculty members and facilities of particular colleges.

Anna University also plans to issue identity cards to faculty members to prevent impersonation by the private managements during inspections to grant affiliation.

“In a month’s time, we will also begin the process of issuing identity cards to all faculty members working in engineering colleges across the State. Once, we get the faculty details, we will verify their educational qualifications, take their photographs and issue them unique identity cards,” the official said.
