Paramakudi firing: Notice issued to CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been directed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to submit a counter affidavit on a petition seeking the filing of the action taken report (ATR) on the inquiry conducted by it into the police firing in Paramakudi in which six Dalits died in September 2011.

An office bearer of the Bahujan Samaj Party moved the court stating that six persons were killed in a police firing in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram on the memorial day for Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran. The police had opened fire on a mob which had resorted to a road blockade. Prior to the firing, the police failed to resort to other standard forms of crowd control like lathi charge or firing tear gas shells or using water cannons, he alleged. Subsequently, the HC had ordered a CBI probe into the incident in December 2011 while hearing a petition.
