Cyclonic storm Lehar looms in Bay of Bengal

The depression formed over South Andaman Sea on November 23 moved northwest wards and intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Lehar’.

The depression formed over South Andaman Sea on November 23 moved northwest wards and intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Lehar’.

‘Lehar’ remained practically stationary and lay centered about 300 km south-southeast of Port Blair. The system would move northwestward and cross Andaman & Nicobar Islands around Sunday night.

It would then enter the Bay of Bengal and  intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm. It is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machillipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada around November 28 noon.

Isolated heavy rain would occur over Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours.

MoS Visits Yanam

Union Minister of State for PMO V Narayanasamy, along with Opposition leader V Vaithilingam and Pradesh Congress president A V Subramanian visited cyclone Helen-hit areas of Yanam on Sunday.

According to information, the  Union minister and Congress party leaders surveyed the Carialapippa area, where paddy crops were extensively destroyed. Later, Union Minister told reporters that if the UT government assesses the damages and sends a proposal, he would take it up with the ministry concerned and take steps to send a central team to the affected areas.

Congress MLA Malladi Krishna Rao and regional administrator of Yanam R Ganesan were with the Union Minister. UT Electricity Minister T Thiagarajan also visited the area.
