'MDMA Shells Out Rs 100 Cr on Rajiv Case'

The quantum of the possible massive expenditure by the agency constituted in 1999 was brought to light by advocate N Chandrasekaran, the counsel for Perarivalan, a death convict in the high profile case.

The quantum of the possible massive expenditure by the agency constituted in 1999 was brought to light by advocate N Chandrasekaran, the counsel for Perarivalan, a death convict in the high profile case.

After attending the in-camera proceedings of the designated court constituted under the TADA Act on Perarivalan’s petition seeking effective monitoring of the MDMA on Thursday, Chandrasekaran told reporters that a special team, including the director, two joint directors,  DIGs and five SPs were engaged in the probe and submitted their reports.

However, the sealed covers remained untouched, he alleged. This, despite spending `100 crore on the probe till date, he claimed.

Chandrasekaran said in the petition that Perarivalan was a victim of the “flawed” investigation conducted by the CBI. He claimed the probe agency has ignored vital clues pointing to possible hand of high profile officials and politicians in the gruesome murder.  If MDMA had performed its task correctly, the “hidden truths and unnamed accused” in Rajiv assassination could have been brought to book, the plea added. The court will deliver its verdict on Dec 10.

MK Bats for release

DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi has said the Central and State governments should lose no time to initiate steps to release Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict Perarivalan, in light of the statement by a former CBI officer that Perarivalan’s confession had been doctored. “I have released many statements asking for the release of Perarivalan, Santhan and Murugan. The officer who has said Perarivalan’s statement was altered, has said he came out in open after 22 years to clear his conscience. But can anyone return 22 years of his life?” asked Karunanidhi, in an editorial to be published in party organ Murasoli.
