Five women, two of them agents were arrested for selling a newborn female baby to a person in Krishnagiri district here on Sunday night. Mageshwari (33) and Nallaammal (27) of Sivagiripatti near Palani, the agents for supplying surrogate mothers, contacted an intermediate for selling the baby to one Sanaullah of Krishnagiri.

P Kavitha, inspector of All Women Police station, Palani received a complaint from Ramaswamy (32) of Kavalapatti village that his wife Abirami (20) had sold their newborn baby delivered at the Palani Government Hospital on August 30.

Based on his complaint, the police started investigating the case.

They found that Abirami and her mother Velumani sold the baby girl through the agents on August 31.

Having separated from her husband, Abirami was residing with her mother Velumani at the latter’s house house at Madanapuram for the last two months.

Mageshwari and Nallaammal had been looking for a surrogate mother for their client Sanaullah whose sister’s son was childless even after nine year of marriage.

When the duo agent learnt that Abirami, who was struggling with poverty, was willing to sell her newborn baby after the delivery, they approached her mother Velumani.

A deal was struck for Rs 1.40 lakh (Rs 1 lakh for the mother and Rs 40 thousand for agents) with Sanaullah.

On August 31, Mageshwari and Nallaammal handed over the baby to Sanaullah at Krishnagiri.

As the baby was underweight, the Muslim couple treated her in a private hospital in Krishnagiri.

Then they shifted her for treatment to a private hospital in Bangalore, said the inspector.

After the inspector Kavitha received the complaint from Ramaswamy, she visited the private hospital in

Bangalore to collect the details of the baby.

When the couple learnt that police had received a complaint, they brought the baby to their house.

As the health of the baby was weak, the inspector got an undertaking letter from

Sanaulllah in Krishnagiri to produce the baby after a week to the police.

The police also arrested Rani, Velumani and Santhi who were involved in the case.

The police booked Abirami under Section 317 (Exposure and Abandoning of Child Under Twelve Years) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Inspector Kavitha also said that though Sanaullah gave Rs 1 lakh to the agent, Abirami got only Rs 30,000.
