Instal streetlights to reduce mishaps on Cuddalore-Chittoor road

In view of several accidents taking place on the Cuddalore-Chittoor Road in the last two years because of insufficient lighting, commuters have demanded that streetlights be installed on the road.

Motorists complain that they face a tough time driving along the road as it does not have streetlights.

They sought installation of light along the median of the 2-km stretch from the Katpadi railway station overbridge.

M Sunilkumar, Dharapadavedu Zonal president and councillor of ward 7, said the median was constructed two years back when the roads was extended by 20 feet.

During this time, the streetlights on the sides of the road had to be removed, owing to the ongoing repair work, he said.

He, however, said, streetlights on the sides of the Cuddalore-Chittoor Road do not throw sufficient light on the middle of the road.

Further, these lights get hidden by branches of trees, which obstructs the light source, he added.

He said, this road connected the town to Andhra Pradesh, and was mostly used by heavy vehicles transporting goods across many states.

“As many as seven persons had died in the past two years in mishaps on the road owing to the absence of the streetlights among other reasons,” he noted.

When contacted, Corporation engineer Baskar said, a study on the streetlights in Vellore city would be conducted by a private consultancy.  This move was in line with efforts to bring all the Corporations in the State under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) to maintain streetlights.
