No dress code, mobile ban in colleges: AICTE

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has no plans to enforce a dress code or put restrictions on the use of mobile phones in engineering colleges in the country.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has no plans to enforce a dress code or put restrictions on the use of mobile phones in engineering colleges in the country.

“We are only proposing to introduce self-defence training for girl students studying in engineering and technical institutions in the country. The council will soon take a final decision to introduce this training programme,” AICTE chief S S Mantha told Express on Sunday.

A section of the media had reported that the AICTE was  planning to enforce curbs on the usage of mobile phones in college campus, introduce dress code, and ask engineering and technical institutions to install CCTV cameras in common areas to ensure safety of female students.

With regards to mandating installation of CCTV cameras in engineering and technical institutions under its aegis, Mantha said, “Already some educational institutions in the country on their own have installed cameras in common areas.”

It may be noted that, the Anna University’s former Vice-Chancellor D Viswanathan has introduced dress code for students and banned the use of mobile phones in the university premises. Still, some private engineering colleges in the State do not have restrictions for students with regards to usage of mobile phones or even have a dress code.
