If the alliance between the Left and the AIADMK emerges victorious in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the prospect of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa becoming the Prime Ministerial candidate would open up, Communist Party of India (CPI) stalwart A B Bardhan said here on Sunday.
Addressing media representatives along with Jayalalithaa after her formal announcement of an electoral pact with the CPI following a meeting at her Poes Garden residence, the Communist veteran said he was confident that the alliance would romp home to victory at the hustings.
Asked if the AIADMK supremo would be projected as the Prime Ministerial candidate, Bardhan said: “If we succeed in the elections, the prospect (of Jayalalithaa becoming Prime Ministerial candidate) would open up.”
However, in an intervention, Jayalalithaa said all such issues would come up at a later time. “Now, our aim is to work together and win all 40 seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” she pointed out.
Jayalalithaa said CPM leader Prakash Karat would be meeting her on Monday.
Earlier, the CM formally announced that the CPI and the AIADMK have decided to form an alliance for the Lok Sabha elections. The AIADMK, she said, would fight the elections on the plank of peace, prosperity and progress.
Meanwhile, indicating an attempt on the part of the Left parties to form an alternative front, CPI General Secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy expressed hope of other secular and democratic parties coming together to remove the Congress-led UPA government in the Centre, which has been discredited by its commissions and omissions. In this regard, he said the alliance with the AIADMK was a “good beginning”.
CPI State Secretary D Pandian accompanied Bardhan and Sudhakar Reddy to Poes Garden.
The CPI is the first national party coming close to endorsing Jayalalithaa as the Prime Ministerial candidate. Earlier, Pandian had gone on record saying he wished her occupying the top job with support from any quarter.
For its part, the AIADMK General Council on December 19 had virtually declared the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister as the PM nominee and a resolution passed at the meet said the ‘time was ripe for electing a PM from the State’.
