He might be nonagenarian and wheelchair bound but DMK chief M Karunanidhi is by far the most tech-savy politician in Tamil Nadu today. And on Saturday, the Dravidian patriarch took another leap in putting to use technology with the party, announcing that alerts about his statements and letters to cadre would soon be sent through text messages to mobile phones.
Speaking to Express, N Naveen and S Suresh, software engineers who manage Karunanidhi’s internet presence, said that short and snappy text messages on important news from the DMK president would be sent from February 15 to all those who register for the SMS service. Naveen said it has been planned to send a short headline for the statements and letters in the text message with a link to the Facebook page or the website where the reader can access the full content.
Karunanidhi, who made his debut on Twitter and Facebook last year, is very particular about the response he gets on the social media. He personally reviews the responses every two days and encourages his account managers to report to him about criticisms made by his followers on the social media.
In fact, the DMK chief’s Facebook account has garnered over 88,000 likes. There are close to 19,000 followers for his Twitter handle. Naveen said in a unique gesture, Karunanidhi made an exclusive video message for his social media followers to convey his Pongal wishes last week. The software engineer said that a massive internet campaign would soon be launched for the DMK’s State conference to be held in Tiruchy.
“We are also in the process of refurbishing the www.kalaignarkarunanidhi.com website dedicated to Thalaivar,” he pointed out. To register for the SMS alerts, mobile users have to send a text message with DMK followed by space and their district name to 56070, a press release said.
