CHENNAI: Dalit and Periyarist organisations joined Tamil outfits to celebrate the 60th ‘birthday’ of LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran across the State on Wednesday.

The Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi celebrated the day by cutting cakes and distributing sweets at midnight in the city.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, Thamizhar Vazhvurimai Katchi leader Velmurugan, Tamizhar Desiya Munnani leader P Nedumaran and Thamizh Desiya Periyakkam leader P Maniyarasan, Naam Thamizhar Movement leader P Seeman, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam besides actor Satyaraj and a few film directors issued statements greeting the LTTE leader.

Tamil news channels joined the event with debates on whether the celebrations were right or wrong.

Leading Tamil poets under Pulavar Pulamaipithan, lyricist and former poet laureate of Tamil Nadu government under AIADMK-founder MGR gathered for a poetry session to hail the Tiger leader.

The MDMK is gearing up for a meeting to commemorate Heroes Day to salute the LTTE cadre who died in their fight against the Sri Lankan government for a separate Tamil Eelam. Especially in Tamil Nadu, there have been several parties and outfits expressing support to the cause of Tamils in Lanka.
