PUDUCHERRY: Tamizhar Desiya Iyyakkam chairman Pazha Nedumaran on Saturday said the period of inquiry by the United Nations Human Rights Committee in Sri Lanka should be extended.
Briefing newsmen at a press conference here, he said the term of the committee, constituted to look into the issues of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, will end this month. Sri Lankan president M Rajapaksa had not cooperated with the enquiry and also no enquiry could be undertaken in Tamil Nadu. Hence, time was required to properly inquire, he said.
Alleging conspiracy to sabotage the Mullaiperiyar dam following the Supreme Court order for enhancement of the storage level, Nedumaran wanted the security of the dam to be entrusted to Tamil Nadu police or the Central forces.
Nedumaran also demanded that power produced by the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant should not be supplied to Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as the States were not prepared to take the risk to instal a nuclear power plant. He said the entire production be utilised for Tamil Nadu.
Further, Nedumaran called up on the AIADMK cadre to remain calm and approach the Supreme Court for the release of Jayalalithaa. Stating that the Tamil Nadu government was paralysed following the conviction of Jayalalithaa, he said the either government should function or should resign.
Nedumaran said the governor of Tamil Nadu should summon the chief secretary and director general of police and issue instructions to them to maintain law and order in the State.
If this was not done, the Director General of Police should be removed from the post, he added.
