Coastal Security Group to Driver's Rescue

CUDDALORE:  Here is a perfect example of the phrase Kavalthurai Ungal Nanban (Police are your friends). For five days, Murugan’s autorickshaw was stuck in five-foot deep water. What came to the rescue was a boat and the Coastal Security Group.

With a family of five, Murugan’s only means of livelihood was the auto. But, following the rains, the family, residing at Gnanambal Nagar in Cuddalore, had to be evacuated as the area was inundated. But Murugan was unable to move his vehicle out as it was stuck.

On Monday, he approached inspector of the Coastal Security Group Sekar here and sought help to pull his auto out.

The inspector, with other security personnel, went to Gnanambal Nagar on a boat. With chest-deep water, the officials tied the auto to the boat with a rope and towed the three-wheeler to the main road.

“I am the sole breadwinner of my family. My two children, wife and my sister are dependent on me. Since my auto got stuck, I had no means to earn money. I was not able to buy anything for my family. So, I decided to approach the Coastal Security guards. Had they not helped me, my vehicle would have been stuck in water for more days and I would have had no way to survive,” Murugan said.
