'Aavin Must Procure Entire Production from Dairy Farmers'

VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam affiliated to the All India Kisan Sabha, has appealed to the State government to ensure Aavin procures all milk production of dairy farmers to protect these farmers from being exploited by private milk companies.

R Mullai, district secretary of the Sangam, said that a resolution to this effect was adopted at the district executive meeting held on Sunday, which was chaired by president, R Nandhi.

Secretary Mullai said that the State government’s scheme of distributing free cows to poor farmers has increased milk production in the district considerably.

However, Aavin was not procuring all the milk produced leaving farmers to be at the mercy of private milk companies who pay far less a price for the milk, he said.

“This has adversely affected farmers and the State government’s efforts to  economically empower them is being derailed,” he said.

The State government should therefore instruct Aavin units to procure all the milk from the district and convert the extra milk into milk products, if the demand for milk is low, he added.

The Sangam also requested the Tamil Nadu government to follow the footsteps of the Karnataka government, which is auctioning sugar stocks in private sugar mills in order to pay arrears to sugarcane farmers in that State.

The Tamil Nadu government should also ensure private sugar mills either disburse arrears in payment failing which the sugar stock be auctioned, it added.
