Tension After Dalit-Vanniyar Girl Marriage

SALEM: A mob attacked houses in Somampatti  late on Monday night after a Vanniyar girl married a Dalit youth. Police have so far arrested nine people in this connection on Tuesday.

According to police, Saravanan (29) an MCA graduate of Dalit colony in Somampatti, was working in a private bank in Chennai. He fell in love with Vanniya Priya (25) of the same locality. The two had a registered marriage on March 3, 2014. Meanwhile, the girl’s parents made arrangements for her wedding, unaware that she was already married. On Monday evening, the couple approached the SP, who instructed Karipatti police to look into the matter.

Following this, police held talks with the parents. After the girl insisted that she wants to live with Saravanan, police sent the couple to Saravanan’s home. Around midnight, a mob entered Somampatti. Police who were stationed there tried to stop them, but failed. The mob attacked several homes and vehicles and hurled petrol bombs. Police have arrested nine persons in connection with this and are looking for 20 others.
