CHENNAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi and DMDK leader Vijayakant on Saturday joined the list of leaders who had condemned the State government for filing an affidavit in Supreme Court, stating that LTTE and outfits supporting it would endanger the Mullaiperiyar dam.
In a statement, Karunanidhi said instead of being firm that deployment of Central Industrial Safety Force (CISF) is needed to ensure safety of Tamil Nadu officials working at the dam, the government had blamed the LTTE to defame and insult them. Flaying the affidavit, Karunanidhi said CISF cover is vital for proper maintenance of the dam. He also flayed the Centre for not understanding the requirements and position of Tamil Nadu on thes issue and urged the Union government to accept the State’s demand.
Describing the reference to LTTE as a bid to portray its supporters as terrorists, Vijayakant demanded that the State government reveal the identity of the organisation which is trying to damage the Mullaiperiyar dam. The State government should strongly insist that CISF is required as officials from Tamil Nadu are being prevented from carrying out maintenance works at the dam, he added.
