Marakkanam Houses Come Crashing Down

VILLUPURAM: Apathy of officials is giving sleepless nights to residents of Thideer Nagar near Marakanam where the roof of a house built by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Welfare Department collapsed on Tuesday.

According to sources, nearly fifty houses were built by the government department at Thideer Nagar and handed over to beneficiaries in 1995. But many of the houses developed cracks and portions of the roof and walls started falling after just ten years. Fearing for their lives, the house owners requested the respective officials to repair the damage or construct new houses, but to no avail.

After rains on Monday, water started leaking from the roof of Krishnaveni’s house which was already damaged and she stayed in a neighbour’s house for the night. On Tuesday morning, she and others heard a loud noise and found the house’s roof collapsed.
