MK Info Wrong on Power Infra, Says Minister

CHENNAI:  Joining issue with the DMK president M Karunanidhi over power generation in the State, Minister for Electricity, R Viswanathan on Thursday accused the DMK chief of giving wrong information regarding power projects in the State.

“The previous DMK regime had failed to accomplish many power projects and had completed very minimum work on various projects.  All their projects were only in letter and not even one unit of power was generated additionally during the DMK regime”, the Minister said in a statement here.

The orders Vallur Unit-I, North Chennai (State II Unit I), Bhavani Kattalai Barrage-III, Periyar-Vaigai Hydel Power project III and Tuticorin (Unit I) were issued during the AIADMK regime and power generation too was started, he said.

The DMK regime had put in the backburner many projects including Bhavani Kattalai Barrage II, Simhadri Stage II,  Periyar power project (Unit II and III), North Chennai Thermal Power Station (Stage II - Unit II), Mettur Thermal Power Station (Stage III), Periyar Hydel power project (Unit III), and Vallur (Unit III). Also, 355 million unit of power were bought from private players at a high price whereas during the AIADMK regime, only 11,075 million unit of power was purchased, that too, only to meet emergency needs.  Karunanidhi had conveniently skipped this point, the Minister said.
