Villagers Perform Last Rites for Killed Monkey

VILLUPURAM: In a bizarre incident, villagers on Tuesday conducted funeral rites for a monkey that was killed in an accident at Virudhachalam Road near Ulundurpet.

On Sunday, a monkey darting across the road was hit by an unidentified car and the animal sustained serious injuries.

On seeing the injured monkey, Subramaniyan, a Hanuman devotee, working as a sanitary worker attached to Ulundurpet town panchayat, with the help of an autorickshaw driver, took the animal to the Ulundurpet Veterinary Hospital, but could not save it.

Subramaniyan, who believes monkeys to be incarnation of Hanuman, carried the dead monkey on a procession and buried it in a land belonging to the Ulundurpet town panchayat on Monday evening.

Some local villagers and Hanuman devotees were also present during the final rites. Sources said it was common to see hundreds of monkey along the Virudhachalam Road near the Ulundurpet market.
