Model Rd: Architect to Help Draft DPR

COIMBATORE:In an attempt to develop and improve standards of city roads for the benefit of the public, the city corporation is to engage a qualified architect, to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of a model road.

In a regular council meeting held on Monday, members of the corporation approved a plan to develop the Diwan Bahadur road, Tiruvenkatasamy road, SNR Road, Masakkali Palayam road, Sanganur road (Sathy road junction to Nallampalayam Junction) and Race Course road.

The above mentioned areas were selected due to the considerable number of commercial establishments like schools, hospitals and other public buildings located on these roads, where thousands of people use them everyday.

“We will open pedestrian lanes on these roads for pedestrian safety, which is our priority. These roads will also be developed for cyclists and other motorists,” said Mayor P Rajkumar. The civic body has roped-in the Institute of Transportation and Development Agency, an NGO, carrying out inspection along with the Architectural Survey works, Model Road Design, and preparing a project report by appointing a qualified architect.

The meeting also decided to prepare a DPR for developing city roads including green track on these roads. However, the civic body is yet to arrive at the total funds for the implementation of the project. Motorists and social activists in the city have urged the civic body to effectively implement at least one of the roads proposed for a model road project, as all of such earlier proposals still remained only on paper.

According to sources, in the 2014-2015 budget, the civic body has initially proposed to improve Raju Naidu road, Dr  Rajendra Prasath road and Alagappa road into international standards.
