Sophisticated Surgery on 108-kg Woman

PUDUCHERRY:  A “high-end laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery” was successfully performed by doctors in a private hospital on a woman, whose body mass index (BMI) was more than 40 and weighing 108 kg.

Dr S P Ilango and Dr J S Rajkumar, who performed the bariatric surgery at AUM Hospitals, claimed that the surgery will help the patient reduce her weight permanently. The multi-specialty private hospital introduced “high end laparoscopic surgery (as opposed to cosmetic) and bariatric surgery” for the first time in Puducherry.

According to doctors, obesity is a pandemic of the 21st century giving rise to various other illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, joint disorders, early onset of bone diseases, and other metabolic diseases, they said. The first patient in Puducherry to undergo anti-obesity surgery, Leela (name changed) underwent ‘sleeve gastrectomy,’ according to Dr SP Ilango and Dr J S Rajkumar.
