Three Kids Injured in School Roof Crash

THOOTHUKUDI: Three students, studying in class III, at the Panchayat Union Primary School at Reddiyapatti in the district were injured after the roof of the school crashed on Tuesday.

The injured were identified as Pon Pandi (8), Selvakumar (8) and Vignesh Bharathi (8).

The incident happened around noon on Tuesday when the Mathematics teacher had just finished the class and had asked the students to form a queue to submit their completed sums. When the students were standing in the queue a portion of the roof crumbled and fell on them. In the incident, Pon Pandi and Selvakumar sustained injuries on their head, while Vignesh suffered injuries on the left leg.

The teachers immediately rushed the students to a nearby PHC at Nagalapuram. Later, all the three were taken to Thoothukudi GH, where CT scan and X-rays were taken to check the level of the injuries.

Kapil Raja, father of Pon Pandi, said that the renovation work at the building was completed just a year ago and the roof had crumbled now. He blamed the continuous rain and the use of poor construction materials for the tragedy.

Headmistress, Chandra, who accompanied the students to Thoothukudi GH, claimed that she wrote to higher officials about the worsening condition of the school building recently, but no action has been taken so far.

Meanwhile officials from School Education Department, police and district administration carried out an inspection at the spot.

The students were immediately shifted to a nearby mutt of a temple. The school will continue to function from the mutt till the repair of the classrooms is completed, said officials.
