NFF Seeks PM Help for Release of Fishermen

PUDUCHERRY: In an attempt to secure the release of fishermen languishing in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, the National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF), on Wednesday, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prevail upon these countries to release them along with their boats. The forum also sought immediate release of fishermen of neighbouring countries from Indian jails, along with their boats.

In a letter to Modi, National Fishworkers’ Forum chairperson, M Ilango said the centre had confirmed that 650 Indian fishermen have been incarcerated in these countries on the ground that they had crossed the maritime border and fished in their waters.

Giving a break-up, he said 350 are in Sri Lanka, 239 in Pakistan, 56 in Bangladesh and 6 are in Myanmar prisons.
