COIMBATORE: A 26-year-old woman, unable to bear the abuse of her husband, allegedly set him on fire after he tried to blackmail her after dousing himself with kerosene. The incident occurred in KV Palayam, Vellalore, on Thursday and the man died late on Friday night.

According to Podanur police, the deceased, R Mayavan (30) of KV Palayam, a mason, had married the woman, M Revathi, around 10 years ago. An alcoholic, Mayavan used to constantly abuse his wife. On Thursday, they had an argument and Mayavan had assaulted Revathi. He then demanded that she prepare dinner for him. As she refused, Mayavan locked her outside the house. He then doused himself with kerosene and threatened to kill himself. However, Revathi lit a match and set him on fire, police said.

Mayavan, who suffered over 80 percent burns, was rushed to the CMCH, but succumbed to injuries on Friday. A postmortem was conducted later.

The Podanur police, who arrested Revathi on Friday, registered a case under IPC Section 307 (attempted murder) and altered it to Section 302 (murder) upon Mayavan's death. She has been remanded and lodged at the Special Jail for Women Prisoners in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
