One killed, 4 Hurt in Rain-related Incident

VELLORE: A 36-year-old woman died and four others were injured in separate and unrelated incidents in Vellore district, which received incessant rain since Saturday night. Two cows were also killed in Kalavai.

The deceased was identified as Parimala (36) of Vadathandalam village in Cheyyar taluk. She had come to her father’s house in Dhonimedu village near Vazhapanthal for the Diwali festival.

The incident occurred at about 1.30 pm when tamarind tree fell on the thatched hut, crushing Parimala to death while she was cooking and also injuring a 60 year-old woman.

In another incident, Selvam (40) of Selva Vinayagar Street in Kaveripakkam and two teenage sons - Naresh Kumar and Dinesh Kumar - sustained injuries after their thatched hut collapsed after continuous rain.

Selvam’s wife Banu escaped unhurt. The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital in Walajapet.

Officials said that two cows of Maheswari, a resident of Kalavai, were electrocuted to death.
