After Scam in Madurai, BDOs told to Check NMR in Tiruchy

DRDA action comes in the wake of reports of staff swindling funds of rural job scheme

TIRUCHY: After a scam was reported in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in a village in Madurai, highlighted by Express, officials from the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Tiruchy, have issued a circular to all Block Development Officers (Panchayat) directing them to thoroughly check if the Nominal Muster Roll (NMR) contains only the names of beneficiaries before uploading it in the system.

Further, they have come up with a mechanism wherein officials would conduct random door checking by having NMR before crediting salary. If they come across any malpractice, stern action will be initiated against the village panchayat staff concerned, DRDA warned.

Speaking to Express, V Shankar, Project Director, DRDA, said, “We have instructed all BDOs (panchayats) to upload details of workers after verification. Further, we will send officials once or twice a week to some panchayats randomly to ask some job holders whether or not they worked on particular days and will check with NMR to confirm the same,” he said.

He also warned that action would be initiated, if village panchayat staff indulged in malpractices like signing on behalf of absentees.

BDOs should question panchayat staff in detail before uploading details like workers’ number of days and they also verify the beneficiaries names they have in the record.
