Congress' Yesteryear Dream Girls Take Separate Orbits

CHENNAI: When actor Nagma landed in Tamil Nadu after her appointment as all India general secretary of Mahila Congress and entrusted with the State, she promised to work closely with another yesteryear dream girl, Khushbu, who is now the party’s national spokesperson.

But, now the women leaders seem to be pulling in different directions and they are not seen together in party functions. On November 19, when the party observed the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, TNCC president EVKS Elangovan and Khushbu paid floral tributes to the late leader’s portrait and left the venue, even as Nagma and State women’s wing leader Vijayadharani made their entry.

When Nagma and Vijayadharani started paying homage, some of the partymen objected saying that they should not do so after the TNCC leader had left. Later, when the two women leaders held a function at the Sathyamurthy Bhavan, the posters for the function was torn by a section of partymen.

Besides, when Nagma and Vijayadharani distributed flood relief in the city, it was not attended by Khushbu. It is not clear whether she was not invited or she had boycotted the function.

After Khushbu joined the Congress, the party held several public meetings and functions attended by the popular actor. During some of the meetings, the cut-outs for Khushbu matched those of party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi. She toured the State and participated in party’s protests, earning the affection of partymen.

When Nagma came to TN, there was no official reception. However, a press meet was arranged later and the actor promised to work together with Khushbu and other women leaders to strengthen the party. Yet, the women leaders do not seem to share cordial relationship and are rarely seen together in party functions. However, Kushbu and Vijayadharani denied any kind of rift among the women leaders and asserted that they are working unitedly for the same objective of strengthening the Congress in TN.
