MK, Weekly Booked for Defamation

CHENNAI: Two defamation cases, one against DMK leader M Karunanidhi and Murasoli S Selvam and the other against R Kannan and Madhavan of Tamil weekly Ananda Vikatan, were filed on Tuesday before the Principal Sessions Court, for their remarks against Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

According to the complaints filed by City Public Prosecutor M L Jegan, on behalf of the Chief Minister, Murasoli carried a news item in its issue dated November 21, under the headline ‘The Achievements of the Government in Four Years’, which was defamatory.

The petition sought to punish Karunanidhi, the author of the news, and Selvam, editor, printer and publisher of the newspaper.

The other complaint was filed against R Kannan, editor and Madhavan, printer of Ananda Vikatan.

The complaint contended that an article carried in its issue dated November 21-27 under the title ‘Manthri-Thanthri’ was highly critical of the Chief Minister and the government.

Both the articles were carried to malign the name and fame of the Chief Minister  in the discharge of her public functions, the complaints added.
