Proactive Steps Needed to Tackle Rain

VELLORE: Professor G P Ganapathy of the Centre for Disaster Management and Mitigation, VIT, has called for the need to be more pro-active in tackling rain-related calamities.

According to him, disaster management strategies comprise risk assessment, mitigation planning and preparedness in the pre-disaster phase and rescue, relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction in the post-disaster phase. .

Using ‘flood hazard maps’ Ganapathy says that prediction of possible damage must be used to mitigate the losses.

“We have dedicated satellites that can beam disaster related data and other support services provided by ISRO and using them, one can prepare quick-response strategies for post-disaster management,” he added.

Ganapathy says that data collected must be incorporated into micro-level planning to tackle disasters.
