Friendly banter soothes frayed nerves in House

CHENNAI: The Assembly on Monday witnessed a jovial mood between Speaker P Dhanapal and the DMK members who have been on loggerheads most of the time on some or other issue.

During the discussion on the demands for grants for Food and Cooperation Departments, Deputy Leader of Opposition Durai Murugan urged the Speaker not to allow the Ministers to deliver ‘lengthy replies’ during interventions. Durai Murugan, in his inimitable style, in a pleading voice, said: “We people do not have anyone else in the House to appeal to...we have to come only to you for remedy.”

A smiling Speaker quipped: “You, please, remember now whatever you said, when you levelled allegations against me, to mediapersons outside the House.”  Pat came the repartee from Durai Murugan : “ You too indulge in such game...whenever we stage walk out, in our absence, you allege that M K Stalin and myself are instigating our members against you.” As the House plunged into a hearty laughter, Durai Murugan said “It is all part and parcel of our routine, sir...”
