DMK MLA raises sharp queries on check dams

CHENNAI: Anguished over the recent developments over the Palar river, R Gandhi, DMK MLA from Ranipet posed some thought-provoking questions to the major parties that have been ruling the State in turns for the past few decades. A discussion on demands for grants for the Public Works Department saw speeches by DMK and AIADMK members on the Palar issue, which flared up recently after Andhra Pradesh began building new check dams and increasing the height of some others.

Gandhi said, “I was happy to hear these views, but Andhra Pradesh built 22 check dams across the Palar though it flows only for 34 km in that State. Have you (AIADMK and DMK) constructed at least one dam across the Palar in Tamil Nadu? Please build hundreds of check dams across the river. Are you (AIADMK and DMK) united on this? Are you acting in unison where the interest of the State is concerned? We point out your mistakes and you point out ours and this has been going on and on.”

The House remained silent as Gandhi spoke. His own party, DMK, was in for more surprise. Expressing his displeasure over minister after minister saying that the DMK failed to do one thing or the other when in power, Gandhi retorted, “aamam…naanga seiyyala; naanga seiyyala; naanga seiyyala !” (Yes, we did not do, we did not do, we did not do). Then he added, “But people voted you to power to accomplish what was not done.”
