THANJAVUR: Pattukkottai municipality won the first prize for best performing local bodies. According to Municipality Chairman S R Jawahar Babu and Commissioner K Achaiya, what clinched the award for the local body was the decentralised solid waste management system they developed for the town. “Instead of dumping waste in one location, we have created eight locations for composting bio-degradable wastes like hotel wastes, coconut shells etc,” they said. Of the 33 wards, bio-degradable waste from four-five wards was collected in one location and was made into compost. Besides this, a vermi-compost yard was also developed. The vermi-compost was being sold at `5 per kg and the community compost produced in eight locations were sold at `2 per kg, they added.
