Top official to review urban development

CHENNAI: The progress in the smart cities and the Metro Rail projects in the State may get a boost with the Union Urban Development Secretary, Rajiv Gauba, set to visit Chennai on Tuesday. It is learnt that he will have meetings with the top state officials here to review the progress in several urban development schemes that the Union government is sponsoring in Tamil Nadu.

Apart from the state officials in Chennai, Gauba will also have a videoconference with the Municipal Commissioners and Collectors on projects including the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY).

The funds from the Centre play a key role in urban development projects and the review by the ministry’s top official may help clear the hurdles in the projects, officials believe.

Gauba, who is being accompanied by a team, would hold a meeting with Tamil Nadu’s Chief Secretary and review the projects. Mission Director of Atal Mission For Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), one of the pet schemes of Prime Minister Modi, is also accompanying Gauba during the visit.
