Railways turns saviours for Tiruchy vendors

TRICHY: A month after demonetisation, business is limping back to normal for the railway vendors. For them, help came from the Railways itself,  which provided adequate change for the larger denominations.

Life had come to a standstill for the 150-odd men working in the cell kitchens of Tiruchy Railway Junction, after the scrapping of notes. “The business was nil and remained so for three days. Later, the railway officers came forward to give us change for big notes through the contract agency,” said food vendor Mohammed Aslam.

“Initially, I used to sell at least 50 to 60 food packets in one compartment. However, the sales dipped. Sometimes, food packets went waste. Waiting for hours at the ATM to withdraw only Rs 2,000 could have made passengers hesitant about spend money,” said another vendor, who did not wish to be named.
