Elevation on the cards for Stalin at DMK general council meet?

The DMK has announced that it will convene a general council meeting on December 20, triggering anticipation of the possible elevation of treasurer MK Stalin and the return of Alagiri.

CHENNAI: The DMK party has announced that it will convene a general council meeting on December 20, triggering anticipation among functionaries of the possible elevation of party treasurer MK Stalin and the return of his elder brother, MK Alagiri, into the party fold.

However, it is not yet clear what form this elevation will take - whether he will be anointed as the party’s vice president or to some other position. This comes after sustained clamour from the Stalin faction to elevate him as the next leader succeeding his father and Dravidian veteran, M Karunanidhi.

Meanwhile, Alagiri and Stalin called on their father at his Gopalapuram residence separately. During the day, other members of the family also called on Karunanidhi, who is recuperating after an ailment. Party sources said Alagiri was insisting on being made the South zone organising secretary, the post which he was holding before he was expelled from the party in 2014.  DMK sources were also of the opinion that party rules should be amended for creating the post of vice president but an announcement on that front may not be made ahead of the general council.
