Foresters want a shot at CMC monkey killers

A day after four medical students of Christian Medical College at Vellore were suspended for allegedly torturing  a female monkey to death on campus, officials from the forest department on Thursday.

VELLORE: A day after four medical students of Christian Medical College at Vellore were suspended for allegedly torturing  a female monkey to death on campus, officials from the forest department on Thursday sought the Bagayam police to transfer the case to the department.

L Kumar, Forest Ranger, Vellore, informed Express that he has requested the police to transfer the case to the forest department after completing the due procedures. “The monkey belonged to the Bonnet Macaque species which is listed in Schedule II, Part I of the Indian Protected Species Act of 1972. We have the authority to remand those involved in the killing,” he said.

Following complaints from animal activists against the brutal killing of a monkey in the men’s hostel of CMC on Wednesday, the college administration had suspended four students - Jasper Samuel Sahoo, Rohit Kumar Yenukotti, Arun Loui Sasikumar and Alex Chekalayil for their alleged involvement in the brutal act. A case was also registered against the four accused at the Bagayam police.
