CHENNAI: The DMK has retained two candidates, while fielding a new face for the elections to three Assembly constituencies to be held on November 19.

According to the list announced by DMK president M Karunanidhi here on Friday, KC  Palanisamy and Anjugam Bhoopathi have been renominated to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur constituencies, where polls were countermanded in May, and P Saravanan is the nominee in Tirupparankundram seat.

Veteran DMK leader and sand mining baron KC Palanisamy, who won the Assembly elections in 2011, will take on V Senthil Balaji of AIADMK.

Elections in the two Assembly segments were cancelled  by the Election Commission in May following complaints of voters being bribed, sources said.

They added that the DMK leadership had convinced him to enter the fray  despite his unwillingness.  According to the affidavit filed during the May general elections, he owns property worth more than ` 110 crore.

Anjugam Bhoopathy, a physician, had been serving as a government doctor before resigning the post to jump into the elections in May. Her father had served as vice-chairman of Thanjavur municipality and head of the DMK’s town unit. For the bypolls in Tirupparankundram, the party has fielded a new face P Saravanan who recently switched over to DMK from MDMK, sources said. He was said to have mired in allegations of selling outdated medical support gadgets.

In May general elections, the party candidate U Manimaran lost to AIADMK’s  SM Seenivel, who passed away recently, by a margin of 22,992 votes. Saravanan’s  capacity to match his rival candidate in meeting the election expenditure was said to have tilted the scales in his favour.
