IIM-T canteen worker dies after 'sexual abuse'

TIRUCHY : A middle-aged woman working in the Indian Institute of Management- Tiruchy (IIM-T) canteen died in the Tiruchy GH on Saturday, three days after she was suspected to have been sexually assaulted. Police are on the lookout for two persons, who allegedly dropped the victim at her house after the ‘act’.

Police said the victim, N Periyakka (40), the second wife of farmer Nallathambi (52) residing at South Street at Chinna Sooriyur, was a non-muster roll worker at the IIM-T and travelled 25 km to her workplace every day.
On October 18, Periyakka left her house in the evening informing her family that she was going to buy snacks for children. However, she did not return till late in the night. She was eventually dropped home by two strangers in an auto. After reaching home, Periyakka collapsed and was taken to the Keeranur GH. But her health soon started to deteriorate, following which she was referred to the Tiruchy GH on Thursday.

Sources said Periyakka regained consciousness on Friday and informed her relatives that she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by the two persons who dropped her home. Subsequently, her relatives lodged a complaint with Navalpattu Police.

“The victim’s relatives are not clear about their complaint. While admitting her in the hospital they had told that she had fallen off her bicycle. Now, they have complained about two unidentified persons who sexually assaulted her. So, we cannot comment on the case until we get a clear picture,” Tiruverumbur Assistant Superintendent of Police C Kalaichelvan said. He said the probe would be based on the autopsy report.
