Tamil Nadu Cabinet discusses new education policy

The State Cabinet, which met on Monday, discussed the pros and cons of the New Education Policy (NEP) of the Central government.

CHENNAI: The State Cabinet, which met on Monday, discussed the pros and cons of the New Education Policy (NEP) of the Central government and the recommendations to be made at the meeting on NEP scheduled to be held in New Delhi on Tuesday. 

Finance Minister O Panneerselvam chaired the meeting of State Cabinet on Monday. This is the second meeting within a week to be chaired by Panneerselvam after the portfolios of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had been allocated to him. The meeting held at Secretariat lasted for 75 minutes.

Sources said that among other subjects the Cabinet also discussed the State’s preparedness to face the ensuing northeast monsoon season and a few issues relating to agriculture. Chief Secretary P Rama Mohana Rao, Advisor to the State government, Sheela Balakrishnan, Finance Secretary K Shanmugam and senior officials were present during the meeting.

Meanwhile, School Education Minister K Pandiarajan, while leaving for Delhi to take part in the 64th meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education, scheduled for Tuesday, told mediapersons that on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, he would suggest some changes in the proposed new education policy.   

Main concerns to be addressed in the NEP would be important part of the agenda for the meeting. 
The topics include  improvement of learning outcomes, rationalisation of posting of teachers in rural areas, national achievement survey (NAS), compulsory board examination in Class X, joyful learning and anganwadi to be located within primary schools etc.
