Madras HC refuses to legalise slaughter of camels across Tamil Nadu

The Madras High Court has dismissed one more PIL seeking to legalise slaughter of camels in the State.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed one more PIL seeking to legalise slaughter of camels in the State.

“We are not inclined to entertain this petition for the simple reason that what it seeks in effect is nullification of the interim order passed by us (earlier) in a writ petition and other connected matters. The main WPs are already pending where we will examine all the issues and the interim order has been granted only qua sacrifice of camels,”  the first bench of Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan said.

The bench was dismissing in limine a PIL from ‘Tada’  Raheem aka Abdul Raheem praying for a direction to the government to provide proper facility for slaughter of camels for Qurbani, falling on September 13.

When the matter came up, Jayesh B Dolia, the counsel for Animal Welfare Board of India, drew the attention of the bench to a newspaper report stating that camels are still being illegally brought into the State for sacrifice.

“We are sure that the State government will take all steps to ensure that our order is not violated and we make it clear that the in-charge of the local police stations would be personally responsible in case we find any violation of the order,” the bench said and directed circulation of this order to all police stations concerned.
