Miscreants attempt to break open ATM in Puducherry town

Unidentified miscreants on Tuesday night attempted to break an ATM machine of a nationalized bank on the Bharathi street – Subbiah street junction here.

PUDUCHERRY: Unidentified miscreants on Tuesday night attempted to break an ATM machine of a nationalized bank on the Bharathi street – Subbiah street junction here.

Though,  they caused damages to the machine, they could not break the cash safe and left the ATM centre.

Neither was a security man posted in the ATM belonging to State Bank of India (SBI), nor the CCTV camera inside the ATM was functioning, when the intruders tried to break open the safety locker of the ATM sometime in between 10.30 p.m to 5 a.m.

The CCTV camera is not functioning for a month. The last transaction was at 10.30 p.m following which the attempt has been made.  Police suspect that miscreants are not professional robbers as they used only screwdrivers to open the vault and not gas cutters.

When they did not succeed, the miscreants also tried through the number lock to get to the money inside the vault and in the process broke the number lock.

When the ATM was found broken, people alerted the police. Odiansaalai police registered a case on a complaint made by Tata Consultancy service incharge, which is maintaining the SBI ATMs, as per a scheme of Ministry of Finance for a contract period of seven years.  The police is making efforts to trace the culprits with the help of surveillance camera nearby and also sniffer dogs.
