The woman developed labour pain while the couple was planning to go to Tiruchy GH

TIRUCHY : In an incident that would tug at heart strings, a 32-year-old visually challenged person turned gynaecologist and helped his wife deliver their baby safely in Manapparai on Friday.

According to sources, Abbas and his wife Farida (30) are  gypsies hailing from Balamuni Nagar in Sivaganga. After several odd jobs, the couple landed up in Manapparai with their elder daughter.

Farida was pregnant with their second baby and stayed in a makeshift home next to the Manapparai railway station while the others eked out a living performing on the streets or drawing graffitti on the
road.

On Friday, Farida developed labour pain and was taken to the Manapparai Government Hospital.

But doctors there referred the 30-year-old pregnant woman and her visually challenged husband to the Tiruchy Government Hospital.

Even as the couple returned to their camp  and were contemplating their trip to Tiruchy, Farida developed labour pain and reportedly told Abbas that it would be too late.

Knowing not what to do, the visually challenged husband, as directed by his wife, reportedly assisted her deliver a healthy boy inside their ramshackle shelter.

In the end, like in some cliched Bollywood flicks, it was a happy ending for the couple as a few good samaritans who happened to notice what was going on alerted 108 ambulance and took them  and their
newborn back to Manapparai Government   Hospital for further treatment.
