TN SHRC acts on New Indian Express' report

The SHRC has taken suo motu action on the detention of juveniles in the city following a report published in the New Indian Express.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Tuesday has taken suo motu action on the detention of juveniles in the city following a report published in the New Indian Express on unlawful detention of seven juveniles in a police station.

On January 10, Express carried a report titled “cops flout law again, detain seven juveniles for hours, assault them”. The SHRC has taken up the matter and ordered the Joint Commissioner of Police (South) to enquire on the matter and submit a report within eight weeks.

The rights panel has also taken suo motu action on two more new reports - a woman's complaint about police harassment to Transport Minister and the death of two persons due to a mysterious fever in Tiruvallur.
