CHENNAI: The next time you are visiting Mamallapuram, you might not need the help of a guide to know more about the world famous tourist destination. The services of a guide is being dispensed with a new mobile application. Named Pinakin, a free audio guide, launched by TN Tourism Department.

Speaking to Express, a tourism department official said, this app is first-of-its-kind initiative and other major spots would be covered in a phased manner. “The mobile app, currently available on Android and iOS platforms, covers four of the State’s famed heritage centres like Mamallapuram, Thanjavur Big Tample, Gangai Konda Cholapuram and Dharasuram. The application is available in Tamil and English,” he said.

On the Google Playstore, the app has been welcomed and had also been given a good rating as well. Users have described it as very useful as it provides details which even a guide cannot. With focus on providing audio content, the application keeps tourists engaged for close to two hours. Users can listen to interesting stories, facts and trivia about the sites. Besides, the application also provides other information such as ticket prices, parking details and dress code. Meanwhile, a tourist department release on Friday said, a tourism mart, earlier planned during December last year, would be conducted for three days, May 20-22, in Chennai. The mart would bring together all stake holders, including the government departments of Art, Culture, Handloom and Handicraft.
