Stick to rules while ferrying school kids, drivers told

The State government reiterated the need for auto rickshaw, maxi cab and motor cab drivers to adhere to the regulations, originally issued in 2012.

CHENNAI: After the death of a 13-year-old who was thrown out of her school van as the driver was allegedly trying to overtake a lorry, the State government reiterated the need for auto rickshaw, maxi cab and motor cab drivers to adhere to the regulations, originally issued in 2012, while ferrying school children.

According to the set of rules issued by the Transport Department, rickshaw or cab drivers carrying school children must register with the Regional Transport Office by submitting an application.
The application must contain an endorsement for registration from the School Principal/Headmaster of the School.

Second, vehicles may not carry school children up to the age of 12, exceeding 1.5 times of the seating capacity of the vehicle. Vehicles must carry a board reading ‘On School Duty’ in English and Tamil, both at the front and rear, according to a press release.
