RAMANATHAPURAM: Visitors at the newly built memorial for Dr A P J Abdul Kalam witnessed high drama after a Bible and Quran was placed in front of Dr Kalam’s statue on Sunday.

A wooden engraved replica of the Bhagavad Gita was near a wooden statue of Kalam playing veena. Sources said Salim, the grandson of Kalam’s brother, went to the memorial on Sunday and placed a Bible and Quran in front of Kalam’s statue to convey that for Kalam all people were equal irrespective of their religion. This gave rise to criticism from political parties, with Naam Tamilar Katchi leader Seeman and MDMK leader Vaiko saying that Thirukkural should be placed near the statue.

Meanwhile, the members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi staged a protest in front of the memorial seeking to remove the Bible and Quran.Following this, Prabhakaran, district president of the party lodged a complaint at Thangachimadam Police Station.
